African Wedding Traditions
If you’re attending your first traditional African wedding here are some popular customs you might experience. Enjoy discovering these wonderful traditions!

the Four Elements
As part of the wedding ceremony the couple samples four symbolic flavours: cayenne for heat, lemon for tartness, vinegar for bitterness, and honey for sweetness. This symbolises their readiness to embrace all of what married life throws at them from difficulties to happiness. While specific items may differ across cultures the underlying message is consistent being that marriage is a journey and you will sometimes go through ups and downs.

Tying the Knot
The bride and groom have their wrists bound with either Kente cloth, strings of cowrie shells, braided grass, or rope. They recite their vows before the officiant ties the knot and seals their commitment to each other. The three-cord knot symbolises the union of the newlyweds and God.

Kola nut Exchange
The Kola nut has a rich history in the tropical rainforests of West Africa, serving for centuries as a healing fruit. In some wedding ceremonies, the bride and groom exchange a Kola nut, symbolising their commitment to support and heal each other throughout their marriage.

Money Spray
During the wedding party, guests participate in a “money spray,” tossing cash at the couple as they dance to traditional music. By the end of the night, the newlyweds have gathered a fund to help start their life together.
