Arab Wedding Traditions
If you’re new to attending traditional Arab weddings, here are some customs you may encounter. Embrace these delightful traditions and enjoy the experience!

tolbe or tulba
A pre-wedding ritual takes place called The Tolbe. During this both the groom’s and bride’s families gather as the groom formally asks the bride’s parents for their blessing to marry. Once he receives their approval everyone recites a sacred prayer from the Holy Quran called “Surah Al-Fatiha.” Following the prayer both families unite to share tea, coffee, or cordial and enjoy a selection of sweets.

Katb Al-kitaab
This ceremony marks the official marriage. The sheikh presents the terms of the marriage, and the bride and groom sign a contract to signify their agreement. Guests are encouraged to dress modestly, with women wearing headscarves.

Mahr
The Mahr is is a dowry or gift the groom presents to the bride during the official marriage ceremony. This valuable gift signifies the groom’s devotion and respect for his bride and remains her property regardless of any future changes in their relationship.

Zaffe
The Zaffe is a memorable introduction for the bride and groom as they enter their wedding reception. A lively parade of drummers play traditional Arabic music as the bride’s father gives her away to the groom. During this rings are moved from their right hands to their left, symbolising their marital status. Female guests enhance the joyous atmosphere by making a high-pitched ululation known as the zaghrouta.

Dabke
The Dabke dance is a highlight at many weddings infusing the celebration with energy and cultural tradition. This traditional folk dance involves professional dancers dancing in a circle, shoulder to shoulder. Wedding guests then join in!

Sword Cake Cutting
A ceremonial sword is used to cut the large multi-tiered cake. This sword has been passed down to the grooms family, for this very moment.

Barmet Al-aroos
As the newlyweds leave their wedding venue in a decorated vehicle, friends and family follow behind them playing loud music and honking all the way to the couples hotel or their new home.
