Hindu Wedding Traditions
Are you attending your first Hindu wedding? We’ve compiled a list of traditions that could take place on the day.
Ganesh Puja
At the start of the wedding ceremony a prayer to Lord Ganesh takes place. The couple asks his blessings for a smooth wedding as he is known as the remover of obstacles.
Baraat
When the groom arrives he’s warmly welcomed by his future brides family. The Aarti is preformed and they shower him with vibrant flower petals to symbolise their acceptance.
Jai Mala
The bride and groom face each other and exchange beautiful floral garlands. This heartfelt gesture symbolises their acceptance of each other as partners for life.
Madhuparka
Sometimes the brides mother and father preform a ritual where they cleanse the groom’s feet with honey, yogurt, and ghee. They also give him sweet honey and milk to drink.
Kanyadaan
The bride’s father takes his daughters hand and gives it to the groom. This symbolises her transition from her paternal family to her husbands one.
Hasta Milap
The bride and groom holds hands tightly symbolising their new union as a married couple and lifelong commitment to each other.
Mangal Phere
The couple completes seven rounds around the sacred fire which is known as “pheras”. They say the Vedic verses and exchange marital vows.
Saptapadi
As the pheras commencing the couple takes seven steps together which reflects their journey through life and the seven vows they make.
Mangalsutra
A sacred necklace called the Mangalsutra is given to the bride by the groom. This necklace symbolises her marital status.
Sindoor
After the groom presents his bride with the Managalustra he then applies sindoor (vermilion) to her hair parting.
Ashirvada
Blessings are given to the married couple by elders and priests wishing them a happy marriage ahead.
Vidaai
As the bride bids farewell to her parental home and sets off on a new journey with her husband, this is an emotional moment.
