popular turkish Wedding Traditions
If you’re attending your first Turkish wedding here’s some popular traditions you may encounter on the day!

Turkish Flag Planting Tradition
Before the actual wedding takes place the groom engages in “flag-planting” at dawn. The male members of the wedding party unite to offer prayers and plant the Turkish flag at the highest point near the bride and groom’s home.

Pre-Wedding Bridal Tradition
Prior to leaving her home the bride gazes into a mirror envisioning the path to a happy marriage ahead. Escorted from her family’s residence by car or horse she listens to Davul Zurna music and waves the Turkish flag, a gift from the groom.

Turkish Ceremony Tradition
The bride and groom exchange vows and partake in a distinctive tradition: stepping on each other’s feet. This superstition is thought to determine which partner will have the last word in the marriage, based on who steps on the other’s shoe first.

Wedding reception Tradition
As the wedding reception commences guests attach coins or money to the red ribbon tied around the bride’s waist. She then writes the names of all the unmarried women on her shoe and the first one to rub off is the person who will marry next.
